“We (City of Cumming) don’t know how much sewage spilled into Bald Ridge Creek,” according to Gerald Blackburn, City Administrator. Blackburn acknowledged it is possible that over 100,000 gallons of sewage may have spilled into Bald Ridge Creek which directly leads to Lake Lanier, Atlanta’s water supply. Blackburn was unaware if any public notice or signage had been placed to notify concerned citizens of the sewage spill. Blackburn later reported that notice and signage had been placed.
EPD only requires the violator to report the amount of spill from the time the spill was detected by the violator until the spill was stopped. The spill was detected and fixed within 24 hours approximately. The City of Cumming reported a 10,000 gallon sewage spill.
Reports are that a foul septic odor was in the air for more than 30 days. It appears to be possible that over 300,000 gallons of sewage spilled into Atlanta's water supply.
