Nydia Tisdale, Georgia’s most notorious citizen journalist

I ran into Nydia many times when I was trying to cover the City of Cumming and the Forsyth County Commission for the Atlanta newspaper, and we became friends. I was always amazed at how apolitical she was in covering what I regarded as extremely right wing, repressively Republican government officials and agencies that masqueraded as lovers of freedom and the American Way of Life, when their actions were absolutely the opposite.

They hated openness and equality.

I imagined, probably correctly, her politics were farther right than mine. That's pretty easy to do. But she never manifested them, or even expressed them, in our hundreds of conversations. She just videotaped, and spoke at public meetings, and demanded openness from political officials who seemed to have forgotten they were bound, by law, to be open and transparent and not dishonest and corrupt.

In Forsyth County, and the City of Cumming, that was an idea as radical as integration, which has been very, VERY, slow to take hold and be accepted in this northern Atlanta suburb built on affluent white flight and lake-front views.

Congratulations for this recognition, Nydia.

You earned every damn bit of it.
