Rebecca Quigg – Democrat candidate for Congress for Georgia’s 6th District
Special election Tuesday, April 18, 2017 at 7am-7pm
Early voting till Friday, April 14, 2017 at 8:30am-6pm
My name is Dr. Rebecca Quigg. First of all I do want to extend my condolences about Phineas Haq over spring break. It's very sad to lose someone in the community at such a young age.
Um, I live in, uh, Cobb County and my son is graduating from Pope High School, so I've been here many times. My son's a member of the Georgia fencing league and we've been to tournaments here and all over the district, and he's also a member of the competition marching band.
So I've spoken to parents, families, relatives, friends, neighbors all over about the issues in this district, and of course, one of the most important things is our public high schools. We need to make sure that we have the best K-12 education and we need to make sure that our children can go to college debt-free. That's very important to me and I'm going to fight for those when we, when I go to Congress.
I'm a cardiologist and I, my last position was as a Director of heart failure transplant at Northwestern as an associate professor of medicine. I'm a lifelong educator and I mentored thousands of medical students, residents, and cardiology fellows and trained them how to deal with patients so quickly ill that they needed a heart transplant. During my time there, I published extensively peer-reviewed literature and I lectured all over the world.
Healthcare is a very important issue and what I see is that we need someone in Congress that will work in a bipartisan way to make what we have better, expand and extend it to all Americans so that we all have coverage [applause]. We cannot take Medicare away from people that paid their entire life and then give them a two hundred dollar voucher a month, and then next year it's a hundred, and then maybe the year after fifty.
This is essential. Americans need to have health care. What I have found during my career is that you must work as a team and I developed a multidisciplinary team that cared for thousands of critically ill patients and when a family gave the gift of life, several surgeons tried to get the organs for their critically ill patients and if I could navigate that, I certainly can navigate whatever party is discussing what issue in Congress. Thank you.
Hello, I want to thank you all for inviting me today, speaking before you. My name is Dr. Rebecca Quigg. I'm a cardiologist, a heart transplant specialist. I'm a lifelong patient care advocate and an expert on the Affordable Care Act and healthcare reform.
Throughout my twenty-five years of practicing medicine, I saw things deteriorate with insurance coverage. People started with getting the same care irrespective of their socioeconomic group and whether they had insurance or not, and by the 2000's if you had a stubbed toe, you could not get insurance because that was a preexisting.
I left my full-time job to start a consulting business and care for my son with disabilities. I was not insurable for five years until I was able to purchase some ACA policy.
I followed this law as it was passed through Congress. I helped enroll people and I've seen what's happened to the Affordable Care Act over the last four years. There have been so many things that we have could have changed and amended, but the Congress was in gridlock and refused to do so.
What I want to do is go to Congress with my experience and background in the healthcare and healthcare reform to work in a bipartisan way to improve this law. We need to get premiums, deductibles, prescription drug prices down for individuals, families, businesses.
We need to make Medicare stronger, not a voucher system, and you need a doctor in the House that knows the background as to how to do this because we don't have enough doctors there and I believe we need a woman doctor in the House to do this. Thank you.
