NYDEO: Panelist Richard T. Griffiths speaks on Fake News & Political Persuasion 09/20/17

Richard T. Griffiths is, for the fall of 2017, the Stembler Professional in Residence at the University of North Carolina School of Media and Journalism, where he has lectured annually since 2000.

Until he retired in March 2017, Griffiths held the position of Vice-President and Senior Editorial Director fro CNN, responsible for global editorial quality control.

In the six months since his retirement, Griffiths has taught journalism ethics, investigative reporting, and editorial management in the US, Jamaica, and Switzerland.

Most recently, he was the Industry Fellow at the Cox Institute for Journalism Innovation, Management and Leadership, Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication, University of Georgia.

For more than twenty years at CNN, Griffiths oversaw “the Row,” the global network’s correspondent story vetting operation. His responsibilities included editorial oversight of CNN’s investigative journalism and the network’s fact-checking operation during the 2008, 2012, and 2016 Presidential elections.

Griffiths led the CNN team that investigated the 9/11 attacks. From 1984-1991, Griffiths was a producer for CBS News based in Atlanta and Los Angeles.

He began his journalism career as a college radio reporter in 1974. Over his career, Griffiths’ work has been recognized with two Emmys, five Peabody awards, and the Investigative Reporters and Editor’s medal.

Griffiths studied at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and is originally from Britain.
