Peter Canfield, Jones Day — biography

Program Chair

PETER CANFIELD is of counsel to Jones Day based in the firm’s Atlanta office.

A graduate of Amherst College and Yale Law School, he is a founding director of the Georgia First Amendment Foundation and nationally has chaired the biennial media law conference of the Newspaper Association of American and the National Association of Broadcasters, been a director of the New York-based Media Law Resource Center and served on the Governing Committee of the American Bar Association’s Forum on Communications Law.

Prior to entering private practice, he clerked for U.S. Court of Appeals Judge Frank M. Johnson, Jr. (Fifth Circuit), U.S. District Judge Myron Thompson (M.D. Ala.) and served as an attorney with the Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice, a Special Assistant U.S. Attorney in Washington, D.C., and a Deputy D.A. in Montgomery, Alabama.

LESLI GAITHER is with Kilpatrick Townsend in Atlanta, where she focuses her practice on media litigation and counseling, as well as complex commercial litigation. She is a graduate of Purdue University and Vanderbilt University Law School.

Overall Assistance

ASHLEY STOLLAR, is the Communications Coordinator at the State Bar of Georgia in Atlanta.

Previously, Ashley was the head of the communications staff of the Judicial Council of Georgia/Administrative Office of the Courts from 2011 to 2018.

Stollar served as spokesperson for press inquiries concerning the activities and programs of the Georgia AOC.

She oversaw the AOC’s social media presence and court system publications. Ashley began her career at the AOC in 1999 as a graphic designer.

She earned a BS in Education from the University of Georgia.

NYDIA TISDALE is “Georgia’s most notorious citizen journalist,” according to the Columbia Journalism Review.

Nydia rhymes with Lydia; Tisdale sounds like 'Tis the season....

Tisdale shines a light on local government via independent video recordings broadcast on YouTube and social media. She owns the blog AboutForsyth.com. Her work has appeared in mainstream media.

Tisdale received the 2017 Impact Award from The Atlanta Press Club.

Tisdale was honored with the 2015 Open Government Hero Award from the Georgia First Amendment Foundation.

Tisdale was recognized with the 2014 Democracy Award from Common Cause Georgia.

Originally from Raleigh, Tisdale worked as a proofreader and typesetter for her student newspaper, The Technician, at North Carolina State University.

Tisdale earned her Bachelor’s degree in Business Management from NCSU in 1985 where her physicist/professor/father Dr. Wesley O. Doggett taught.
